AskFolder
Privacy policy
The short version. AskFolder runs in your browser. Your files and your questions never leave your computer: we never receive them, so we can't read, keep, share or lose them. There are no analytics and no tracking. Signing in is optional, and only for Pro; without it there are no cookies at all.
The only data that reaches anyone is what any website needs to be delivered: our host, Cloudflare, sees your IP address when your browser loads the page.
Your documents and questions
- When you open a folder or files, your browser reads them on your computer. Their text and the index built from it stay in that browser tab's memory, and are cleared when you close the tab or choose "Close folder".
- Your questions are answered in the same tab. They are never sent anywhere.
- Meaning search uses a small AI model (all-MiniLM-L6-v2) that your browser downloads from askfolder.com, like the rest of the page, and runs on your computer. It is never given to, or run by, anyone else.
- The page enforces this itself: its Content Security Policy lets it load only askfolder.com's own files and forbids sending data to any server. You can check this in your browser's developer tools (Network tab).
- "Open the file here" shows your own file from your computer, in your browser.
What leaves your device, and who sees it
| When | Who receives it | What they can see |
|---|---|---|
| When your browser loads askfolder.com | Cloudflare, Inc., our hosting provider | Your IP address, browser type and the time, to deliver the page's files and protect the site from attacks. Cloudflare's own privacy policy governs its logs. |
| Never | RPTX LLC (us) | Nothing: no documents, questions, accounts, analytics, cookies or identifiers. |
| If you email us | RPTX LLC | Your email address and message, used only to reply. Deleted 12 months after your question is resolved, or sooner if you ask. |
On your device
To open quickly and work offline, your browser keeps a copy of AskFolder's own program files (not your documents). It also keeps, only in this browser: your settings (theme, the language of your scans), your Pro license if you have one, folders you save with Pro (their file names and text, never the files), and, if you sign in, your name and email so the app can show who's signed in. AskFolder's Settings, then Data controls, clears all of it; so does clearing your browser's site data for askfolder.com.
AskFolder Pro
Pro isn't on sale yet. When it is, payments are handled by Paddle.com, our reseller and merchant of record: Paddle receives your name, email, billing address and payment details to process the payment, send receipts and run its billing portal (invoices, your card, cancelling), under its own privacy policy. Our license service (license.askfolder.com, on Cloudflare) receives your order number or your existing license and asks Paddle about that subscription, to sign this browser's Pro license; it keeps nothing. Pro's saved folders and reading of scans and photos run on your computer, like everything else.
Signing in (optional)
You can sign in with Google, or with a link we email you, so Pro follows you to any device. With Google, it tells our license service your verified email address, your name and an account ID. With an email link, the address you type is sent the link by Resend (resend.com), our email service, which keeps a delivery record of that email under its own privacy policy; the link works for 15 minutes. We don't put them in a database: they're sealed into a cookie that only your browser holds (at license.askfolder.com, for 30 days, or until you sign out). When you ask for your Pro, your email is sent to Paddle to find your subscription. Signing in never involves your files or questions. The provider's own privacy policy covers the sign-in on its side.
Children
AskFolder is not directed at children under 16.
Your rights
We hold no personal data about you unless you email us (a sign-in lives in your browser's cookie, and a purchase in Paddle's records). To ask what we hold, correct it or delete it, write to privacy@askfolder.com. If you are in the EU or UK, you may also complain to your data protection authority.
